    It's probably an unpopular opinion, but if you're going to go as far as using gentoo, you may as well just get all the source yourself to compile. With gentoo, you're getting the source packages from gentoo... why not just get it from "the source" ? :). I like the idea behind gentoo, but it'd be better if it grabbed source packages from the official distribution sites. Which I know isn't really feasible with so many different packages, because you know at some point it will break. It takes like two weeks to get a full system up and going for me that way, but it really does run nice when you just build everything yourself.

    Ran gentoo many years ago for quite a while until emerge became fun no more. Play with it long enough and you will have major problems. Good way to learn though. If you just want a distro with architecture optimized binaries try cachyos instead. Its on my list to play with sometime.

    I tried out CachyOS on my laptop. Three
    separate times the installation got
    broken after an upgrade and wouldn't
    boot. After the third time, I said
    screw it and just installed Ubuntu
    Server. Then added openbox and some
    other GUI components manually.
