• Gating message areas

From Amessyroom@1:103/705 to All on Thu Feb 5 16:01:22 2026
I'm working with a point software package.

Wondering if there is a way to gate QWK
and USENET message areas to FTN, so i
can try and add them to my point system via
    areafix.

    i.e. DOVE-General or alt.bbs

I see there is a option in settings to gate
to other net; but not sure what else has to
be done to be able to access the message area
    via areafix.

That setting will need to be enabled for SBBSecho to export QWK or USENET-imported messages to FidoNet (even for a point). But that has nothing to with areafix. You should be able areafix-add that area (if it's in your area file), regardless. But you'll be missing all non-locally-created messages in those message bases in your packets unless you enable the "gate between net types" option.

I've added dovenet sub-boards and I'm getting content, but cannot seem to post.

    Also have gotten alt.bbs exported.

But my postings fail. The point software doesn't show problem, but I get
a security violation on the BBS side.

    2026-02-06 02:02:07 ALT.BBS: Security violation - 1:3634/58 not in Area File

I'm not sure where the problem is. Here are entries for these sub-boards from area.bbs

    DOVE-GENERAL DOVE-GENERAL 1:3634/58 1:3634/58.1337

    USENET_ALTBBS alt.bbs 1:3634/58 1:3634/58.1337

Are these incorrect, or is there other things that need to be defined to allow the BBS itself to be the "uplink/hub" for the sub-board?

...People like criticism...just keep it positive and flattering.

Those messages mean that posts from 1:3634/58 are being rejected. Is 1:3634/58 your address? What are you trying to import messages from your own address?

Those log messages are not mentioning posts from any point system. Did you find log messages that refer to posted messages (echomail) from the point system?

I'm not sure where the problem is. Here are entries for these sub-boards from area.bbs

    DOVE-GENERAL DOVE-GENERAL 1:3634/58 1:3634/58.1337

    USENET_ALTBBS alt.bbs 1:3634/58 1:3634/58.1337

Do you mean areas.bbs (not "area.bbs")? What do you have set in echocfg->Paths and Filenames->Area File?

If 1:3634/58 is *your* addres, it would not normally be listed in the area file - that's likely a mistake. I would expect to see just *one* linked node on each of those lines and that would be the point system's address.

Are these incorrect, or is there other things that need to be defined to allow the BBS itself to be the "uplink/hub" for the sub-board?

    It looks wrong.

I thought a source had to be provided (i.e. uplink) before linked node (receiving message).

Those log messages are not mentioning posts from any point system. Did you find log messages that refer to posted messages (echomail) from the point system?

Do you mean areas.bbs (not "area.bbs")? What do you have set in echocfg->Paths and Filenames->Area File?
    It is shown ../data/areas.bs

If 1:3634/58 is *your* addres, it would not normally be listed in the area file - that's likely a mistake. I would expect to see just *one* linked node on each of those lines and that would be the point system's address.
I obviously misread the wiki and thought an UPLINK was required before a linked node in the areas.bbs

I agree. 3634/58 is my bbs fidonet address. I will remove it from areas.bbs
